GPCRs are receptors for a diverse range of ligands from large proteins to photons and have an equal diverstiy of ligand-binding mechanisms. Classical GPCR signaling involves signal transduction via heterotrimeric G-proteins, however many G-protein independent mechanisms have been reported.
