Basic Information
Name Sleep disturbances
Description Sleep disturbances mainly include insomnia and hypersomnia. Insomnia is most often defined by an individual's report of sleeping difficulties. Insomnia is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. One definition of insomnia is difficulties initiating and/or maintaining sleep, or nonrestorative sleep, associated with impairments of daytime functioning or marked distress for more than 1 month. Hypersomnia is a disorder characterized by excessive amounts of sleepiness. Hypersomnia can be caused by brain damage and disorders such as clinical depression. Insomnia affects at least 80% of depressed people. Hypersomnia, or oversleeping, can also happen, affecting 15% of depressed people.

sleep dysregulation Emslie, 2001 patients only P-value = 0.005 On baseline sleep polysomnography, subjects with a later rec...... On baseline sleep polysomnography, subjects with a later recurrence had decreased sleep efficiency and delayed sleep onset (sleep latency > 10 min). Probability of recurrence at 12 months was 0.39 compared to 0.15 in subjects with non-delayed sleep onset (p = 0.005). Baseline suicidal ideation and sleep dysregulation on sleep polysomnography predicted recurrence in a large sample of depressed children and adolescents. More...
