Basic Information
Name Serotonergic system
Description Serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter. Biochemically derived from tryptophan, serotonin is primarily found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, platelets, and in the central nervous system (CNS) of animals including humans. Serotonin is mainly metabolized to 5-HIAA, chiefly by the liver. Metabolism involves first oxidation by monoamine oxidase ( MAO ) to the corresponding aldehyde. This is followed by oxidation by aldehyde dehydrogenase to 5-HIAA, the indole acetic acid derivative. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, and is found in all bilateral animals, where it mediates gut movements and the animal's perception of resource availability. The neurons of the raphe nuclei are the principal source of 5-HT release in the brain.

The blunted cortisol responsiveness to fenfluramine (FNF) administration in depressed patients may reflect functional hypoactivity of central serotonergic system at least during the acute phase of major depression. Within Brodmann's area 32, a glucose metabolism deficit in the depressed subjects on placebo day was observed by voxel-level analysis, but no volumetric deficit was found in the subgenual regions examined. The lack of difference in the response to fenfluramine administration between unipolar and bipolar depressed patients may indicate that overall serotonergic function in unipolar and bipolar depressed patients is similarly impaired. More...
serotonergic system Anderson, 2004 patients and normal controls Unlike healthy male subjects who have significant increases ...... Unlike healthy male subjects who have significant increases in rCMRglu in prefrontal and parietal cortical regions after receiving fenfluramine, depressed male subjects have no significant increases in rCMRglu. Blunted increases in rCMRglu in response to fenfluramine in prefrontal and parietal cortex are consistent with our previous pilot study and the indoleamine hypothesis of depression. More...
